A SEARCHLIGHT on a P&amp;O cruise ship scans the sea for survivors after two cargo vessels collided.
One man was found dead and two were pulled from the sea but four others aboard the UK-flagged Verity are missing.
It sank shortly after it hit the Bahamas-registered Polesie early yesterday in the North Sea.
German coastguard said that divers later searched the wreck on the sea floor, 30m below the surface, for signs of life but found none.
The 91m Verity and 190m Bahamian-registered carrier Polesie crashed at about 5am local time, 22km south of Heligoland island.
Experts fear that the missing could have survived for no more than 20 hours in the 12C waters.
Hopes faded further last night as 48kph winds, 3m waves and fog hampered the huge rescue effort.
British guests on P&amp;O's 5,200-capacity Iona, sailing to Rotterdam, told how it had joined the search.
Passenger Ian Hardman said: "The crew displayed impeccable professionalism.
Verity, bound for Immingham, Lincs, had a cargo of steel. The Polesie, heading to La Coruna, Spain, remained afloat with 22 on board.
None were hurt.
