Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper blamed Government failure to clear the backlog, as 138,000 were awaiting a first decision in March. She said: "We've seen them really flailing around because they're simply not taking asylum decisions. We&nbsp;need grip, not gimmicks." Natasha Tsangarides, of Freedom from Torture, called the tents plan "utterly contemptible".
The Home Office is expected to send an initial 50 people to a giant barge in Portland, Dorset, next week.
The Government said: "The use of hotels is unacceptable.&nbsp;There are more than 51,000 asylum seekers in hotels costing &pound;6million a day.
