A BID to carry out a mass cull of deer around cities in Scotland's Central Belt has caused anger among animal rights campaigners.The Scottish Gamekeepers Association (SGA) has written to the Scottish Government proposing a pilot scheme to manage the "unchecked" expansion of roe deer close to population centres such as Glasgow and Edinburgh.This would see an "initial cull increase" to take pressure off roads and habitats as well as producing "high-quality" venison for Scots to eat, they said.The SGA estimated road accidents involving deer have reached 10,000 a year and claimed green spaces, gardens and nature reserves are being hit by overgrazing, hampering national efforts to boost biodiversity.The SGA also said there is a surplus of underused deer managers in the Central Belt of about 2000 qualified individuals.There are between 300,000 and 400,000 roe deer as part of a wider deer population of one million, with populations surging recently.But John Patrick, spokesman for Scotland for Animals, said: "They're creating a problem where there isn't one."It's scaremongering so the gamekeepers can have their day out with their guns." SGA chairman Alex Hogg said: "Our proposal starts from a small base but has potential to grow and be rolled out further, by demonstrating what can be achieved."
