RURAL parts of Scotland are falling behind on take-up of electric cars due to a lack of charging infrastructure, according to a study.

Drivers in the Western Isles were least likely to own ultralow emission vehicles (ULEVS) which counted for fewer than one per cent of cars on the road - the sixth worst rate in the UK.

The research by Claims.co.uk found of 19,800 licensed vehicles on the road in Nah-Eileanan Siar council area, just 190 (0.96 per cent) met the ULEV criteria.

It covers battery-powered electric cars, plug-in hybrids and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.
