MOST households will end up forking out more for energy despite the price cap being cut, consumer champion Martin Lewis warns.
Regulator Ofgem yesterday confirmed a limit for 29million households will fall by &pound;1206 to &pound;2074 a year for an average dual fuel customer from July.
But while a typical bill will fall by &pound;426 it only just covers the &pound;66 a month of support over the winter through the now-axed Energy Bills Support Scheme.
Lewis said: "Overall, this still leaves people paying double or more what Lewis they did before the crisis hit in 2021." His alert came as Chancellor Jeremy Hunt was forced to admit more support may be needed. And according to the charity National Energy Action, the number of households in fuel poverty will still be 6.6million.
The cap cut follows a fall in the wholesale price of energy, which surged after Russia invaded Ukraine.
Ofgem has also sparked anger by proposing to increase energy suppliers profit margins from 1.9 per cent to 2.4 per cent, saying it will stop more outfits going bust.
