DISPOSABLE vapes have caused a series of fires and a "serious threat to life" in a Scots council area.
Scottish Borders Council said it has had to deal with a number of "near miss incidents" where highly flammable vapes and e-cigarettes have combusted on bin lorries.
There have also been blazes at waste transfer depots in the area as a result of the vapes&nbsp;being wrongly disposed of in general waste or regular recycling bins.
The devices, which contain lithium batteries, are prone to overheating if not recycled properly in a designated battery or vape bin.
Councillor Jenny Linehan, the authority's executive member for&nbsp;environment and transport, said: "We've recently had a number of dangerous incidents caused by fires started by vapes and when this happens it can cause a serious risk to life for the staff working in these areas and damage expensive equipment paid for by the taxpayer.
"All of our Community Recycling Centres can accept&nbsp;disposable and reusable vapes or e-cigarettes and even some of the larger supermarkets have specific bins where batteries and vapes can be disposed of responsibly."
In September, First Minister Humza Yousaf said his government would hold a consultation on a single-use vape ban as he set out his priorities for the coming year.
