Donanemab has antibodies that bind to a protein which builds up in the brain in Alzheimer's early stages.Unlike current treatments, which only relieve symptoms, it appears to tackle the underlying disease. Early trial data showed it slowed mental decline by 36 per cent but four deaths three on donanemab and one in the placebo group - were considered "treatment-related".One in 62 had serious side effects such as brain bleeding. It costs almost £10,000 for six months, £25,000 for 12 and £38,000 for 18.UK agencies are reviewing the drug's safety data and evaluating its cost-effectiveness for the NHS.
