A COMMANDO is lowered from a helicopter to rescue children in a cable car, hanging by a single wire more than 1000ft above a gorge.

The passengers had been using the cable car to travel to school in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province when a cable broke. They were stuck 1150ft up for more than 12 hours before special forces arrived. They could be seen dangling from helicopters as they plucked the children to safety.
As helicopters could not fly after dark, rescuers shifted to a risky operation to use the intact cable to approach the car with a makeshift chairlift.
