THE King will use his Christmas message to praise healthcare workers and highlight the importance of community cohesion.

The monarch's themes have been chosen amid his ongoing treatment for cancer and after riots following the stabbing of three girls in Southport in July.

A Palace source said the speech would also "reflect on international, national and personal challenges and how they can be overcome by communities supporting one another.

A royal insider said: "His Majesty will no doubt be in a reflective mood after events of the last 12 months, but is determined to start the new year in a positive fashion." Health has been on the King's mind as he and the Princess of Wales, 42, were hospitalised in January, Charles for an enlarged prostate and daughter-in-law Kate for an abdominal operation.

Both were diagnosed with cancer within days of each other weeks later.
