ALL Creatures Great and Small viewers heaved a sigh of relief last night after hero vet James Herriot made it home to wife Helen for Christmas.
In the plot of the special, called On a Wing and a Prayer, James had gone off for training at an RAF base so he could do his bit in the Second World War - even though being a vet was a protected profession.
An emotional phone call with his very pregnant wife, played by Rachel Shenton,&nbsp;made Glaswegian James (Nicholas Ralph) determined to get back to her for the big event.
But events conspired to keep him away and in the end he went AWOL, ditching his Army duties in favour of his family ones.&nbsp;By the time he made his way back to fictional Darrowby in North Yorkshire, he had missed the birth - but Helen was thrilled to see him nonetheless.
Rachel said her character had enjoyed being cared for more this year due to the pregnancy.
She explained: "Helen is being looked after and waited on a bit, which has literally never happened!
"She's not comfortable with that role, she's more comfortable doing everything for everybody else. But that was quite nice.
