A WORLD-FIRST breakthrough has sparked hope for patients with the cancer that killed Dame Deborah James.
Australian scientists said they found a new "roadmap" to beating bowel cancer, which claims tens of thousands of lives each year.
They discovered an important group of immune cells in&nbsp;the large bowel - called gamma delta T cells are "crucial" to preventing the disease.
Dr Lisa Mielke said: "They constantly patrol and safeguard&nbsp;epithelial cells lining the bowel, acting as warriors against potential cancer threats.
Understanding how the microbiome and immune cells&nbsp;interact may spark reductions in bowel cancer.
The study was by the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute in Heidelberg.
BBC journalist Dame Deborah, 40, died from the disease last year.
Immunotherapy is one of the main treatments but fewer than 10 per cent of patients respond to it.
