A NEW hotel has closed just days before Christmas hundreds of staff losing their jobs.
with Virgin Hotels, on Clyde Street, Glasgow ceased trading yesterday. Unite Hospitality, which represents workers at the venue, said staff had been left not knowing if they'll be paid for hours worked.
The union blasted the move as "morally reprehensible".
Lead organiser Bryan Simpson said: "The way in which workers at Virgin Hotels have been treated is outrageous. Members were told by the CEO the hotel would be closing with immediate effect, without the required notice or consultation, six days before Christmas.
"Senior management couldn't even confirm whether workers would be paid wages for hours worked. This may be unlawful and we'll be doing everything to ensure workers get the wages, severance packages and compensation they deserve."
The hotel opened in August but Virgin Hotels announced earlier this month the owners of the building Lloyd's Development Ltd - had entered -administration. It led to Virgin Group offering to buy the property in a bid to keep the hotel open.
This offer was rejected by Lloyd's Development, which is Maltese owned but based in the tax haven island of Guernsey.
The Record has approached Virgin Hotels for comment on the closure of the hotel.
