But new figures released under FOI show the amount given to the private sector for treating NHS patients is on the rise under the SNP-led Government.
In 2018/29, the total stood at &pound;24.1million, before surging to &pound;32.7 million and falling to &pound;15.4million in the first full year of the pandemic.
It rose to &pound;24.2million in 2021/22 and jumped again to &pound;31.4million last year. The total since 2018 stands at &pound;128million.
Scottish Lib Dem leader Alex Cole-Hamilton, who unearthed the figures, said: "For a government that goes out of its way to proclaim its progressive credentials, I think the public might be surprised by how much NHS work is being contracted out."&nbsp;
Labour MSP Jackie Baillie said: "This is shameless hypocrisy from the SNP. Under this government, thousands of patients have been forced to go private due to the SNP's catastrophic failure to support our NHS."
A Scottish Government spokesperson said: "The use of the independent sector to provide additional capacity is not a new development.
"The &pound;128million reportedly spent treating NHS patients in private hospitals, represents a tiny fraction less than 0.2 per cent of the total frontline health budget from 2018-19 to 2022-23."
