<p>The actor and radio presenter hoped to land the part of the island bobby in the BBC children's show due to his real-life experience. But panto&nbsp;favourite Grant, who plays Sam Spiller in River City, admitted bosses got it right by picking Andrew Agnew to play PC Plum.</p>
<p>He told BBC Radio Scotland, he said: "As a former police officer I&nbsp;thought, 'This is a job made in heaven for me.</p>
<p>"I was working in the children's department at the BBC and I was asked to go and audition.</p>
<p>"They said, 'It's a singing part. You have to sing'. I was like, 'What?""</p>
<p>Stott, 55, spent four&nbsp;years as a constable with Lothian and Borders Police in his 20s before breaking into showbiz.</p>
