HOMEOWNERS could face a massive "income shock" amid fears interest rates will surge to almost 5.5 per cent.
CPI inflation eased from 10.1 per cent to 8.7 per cent last month - but that's not as low as expected after the the Bank of England hiked interest rates.
Economists reckon the bank will raise rates again, starting next month from 4.5 to 4.75 per cent.
Markets were yesterday betting that rates would hit 5.5 per cent by January.
Barclays bank chief CS Venkatakrishnan said as fixed-rate deals end, people could spend "about 28 to 30 per cent of their income" on mortgage payments.
He added: "So there is a&nbsp;huge income shock." Core inflation which does not include energy and food rose last month to a 31-year high of 6.8 per cent.
But CPI was higher after average food prices leapt by more than 19 per cent.
Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves said: "As bills keep surging, families will be worried. They will be asking why this Tory Government won't bring in a proper windfall tax on the -oil and gas giants."
