Scotland's largest prison, HMP Barlinnie in Glasgow, had the highest number of deaths, with 47 between 2012-13 and 2021-22. HMP Edinburgh had 44 deaths over the period, while Cornton Vale - Scotland's only all-female prison - had seven deaths. Of prisoners who died between 2012-13 and 2021-22, 96 per cent were male. A total of 96 were aged 55 or above, with 79 fatalities in the 45 to 54 age group.
