KEN Bruce has revealed he hates small talk in the pub and is much more comfortable speaking into a microphone.
The 72-year-old Scottish radio presenter, who recently switched from his show on BBC Radio 2 to Greatest Hits Radio, admitted he feels more at ease speaking into a microphone as small talk will eventually "fail me".
Speaking on Gyles Brandreth's Rosebud podcast about his motivations for getting into radio as a teenager, he said: "I wasn't very confident.
"Even today, in a pub, small talk will fail me after a while, so this was a chance just to sit and concentrate on speaking.
"I find I'm much more lucid speaking into a microphone than I am in normal conversation.
"Because somehow the brain concentrates and thinks, 'You've just got to speak in proper sentences, finish them and finish the thought, particularly before you move on and then shut up."
The dad of six admitted living and sharing a bedroom with his older brothers forced him into radio as he wanted to be heard, adding: "They were great fun, they were very inventively funny.
"But they were crosstalk comedians together, so I never got a word in and I tend to think that's why I chose to go into radio because there was nobody to interrupt me.
"I was in a room on myown and I was talking and people could hear what I had to say."
