A THOUSAND-YEAR-OLD ring has been found in a town - by a descendant of a family who have lived there for centures.

LOOK WHAT I PICT UP AT FORT DIG

The kite-shaped Pictish ring, with a garnet or red glass centre, had lain undiscovered at the Burghead fort in Moray.

The town of Burghead was constructed over much of the fort in the 1800s, with the stone that remained used for building.

But the historic ring was uncovered in a dig led by Aberdeen University and dug up by John Ralph, a volunteer whose ancestors moved to the town hundreds of years ago.
