Lorry driver killed cyclist, 22, at lights

A LORRY driver killed a young cyclist after running her over at a set of traffic lights.

Paul Mowat, 69, struck Emma Burke Newman, 22, in Glasgow city centre.

He turned at the lights and hit Emma, who had been on the lane to his left and moved off seconds after him.

She was then dragged under the vehicle for 53 metres.

Mowat, who had a clean driving record, was later found to have had his view obstructed by a reversing camera, dirty mirrors and windscreen.

He pled guilty yesterday at Glasgow Sheriff Court to causing Emma's death by careless driving in January last year.

The court heard that Emma, a keen cyclist, skier and swimmer, was born in France and moved to Scotland in 2022 to study architecture at Glasgow School of Art.
