IDRIS Elba has confirmed that he will not play James Bond.
The actor, 50, said he intends to stick with his role as cop John Luther rather than becoming 007.
Speaking at an event in Dubai, Elba addressed long-standing speculation that he would take over from Daniel Craig as the suave spy created by novelist Ian Fleming.
He was a bookies' favourite to take over along with Bridgerton's Rege-Jean Page, Superman Henry Cavill and Venom's Tom Hardy. But Elba ruled himself out after being asked about his upcoming film based on the BBC series Luther.
He said of the project: "It's very dark. We've been working on the television show for about 10 years so&nbsp;the natural ambition is to take it to the big screen and we're here with the first movie.
"A lot of people talk about another character that begins with J (and ends with B) but I'm not going to be that guy. I'm going to be John Luther.&nbsp;That's who I am.
Craig, 54, is leaving the Bond franchise after five films, with his version of the character seemingly killed off in No Time to Die.&nbsp;The next film is expected to be a prequel, showing Bond in his earlier days.
Elba rose to prominence as Stringer Bell in hit US series The Wire. He was also in the movie Beast and his next role will be alongside wrestler John Cena in an Amazon film called Heads of State.
