Martial flaw

SOUTH Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is facing impeachment calls over his short-lived attempt to impose martial law.

Yoon sparked fury by sending heavily armed troops into the capital's streets, claiming he was trying to stop anti-Seoul opposition groups.

But parliament voted unanimously to overturn the martial law order after just six hours. Opposition parties submitted the impeachment motion hours later.

During the tense hours under martial law, armed forces surrounded the parliament, backed by army helicopters and armoured vehicles.

Lawmakers climbed walls to get into the building and held off troops by activating fire extinguishers.
