In the first big change for 28 years, the Royal British Legion has replaced the plastic stem to ensure the poppy is fully recyclable.
The new poppies are produced from a blend of renewable fibres from responsible sources.
The Royal British Legion - which has been developing the plastic-free poppy for three years said half the paper comes from offcuts created during the production of paper coffee cups.
They can be obtained from today by donating to Legion volunteers and in major supermarkets.
Remaining poppies with plastic stalks can still be found. These can later be recycled at Sainsbury's stores.
The annual poppy campaign shows solidarity towards the Armed Forces community in the run-up to Remembrance Sunday, which falls on November 12 this year.
It also raises funds to support veterans, serving personnel and their families all year round.
