FEWER than one in five people in Britain know they are recommended to drink no more than 14 units of alcohol a week.
Those aged 18 to 34 were least informed, with only 11 per cent aware of what the guidelines were, compared with 22 per cent of people aged 55 and over.
Awareness was better in Scotland than the rest of the UK. Here 22 per cent of adults knew the low-risk drinking guidelines, compared with the UK average of 18 per cent.
The guidelines were introduced in 2016 by the UK Chief Medical Officers.
The figures come from a poll of 6300 people by Drinkaware for Alcohol Awareness Week, which runs until July 9. Regularly drinking more than 14 units a week increases your risk of developing health problems including mouth, throat and breast cancer.
It is also recommended that people have several drink-free days a week and avoid bingeing.
Karen Tyrell, Drinkaware CEO, said: "If anyone is worried about their drinking or wants to drink less, Alcohol Awareness Week is a good time to talk to your friends and family."
