SCOTLAND and much of the UK will be gripped by a new storm in the run-up to Christmas, forecasters warn.
The Met Office has announced that Storm Pia, named by the Danish Met Institute, will take hold over the UK today, bringing wind gusts of up to 80mph.
The impact is likely to be strongest across the far north and north-east of Scotland, including the Northern Isles during the morning, where winds of 70-80mph are possible "for a time".
The weather warning, which covers the whole of the country, came into effect at midnight and lasts until 9pm tonight.
Forecasters have warned travel is likely to be impacted, in terms of roads and public transport, where delays to air, rail, road and ferry journeys are expected.
Power cuts and short-term loss of services are also expected.
Those living in coastal areas are advised to watch out for large waves and ocean spray which could batter communities.
The Met Office has also warned the blustery conditions may stretch into tomorrow. The forecaster said: "It'll remain windy for many on Friday, with further periods of rain likely to sweep in from the west but any snow will be confined to the hills of Scotland."
