Fares to rocket as peak scheme abolished

A PILOT scheme abolishing peak rail fares is to be scrapped, sparking misery for train travellers.

The initiative, which has saved commuters thousands of pounds, will end on September 27 and lead to massive price rises.

A day return ticket between Glasgow and Edinburgh will rise from £16.20 to £31.40.

Jim Baxter of the ASLEF train drivers' trade union said: "We are really angry and beyond disappointed to hear that the Scottish Government has scrapped the peak fares and refused to make it permanent.
