A GROUP of construction workers who spent 17 days trapped under a collapsed mountain tunnel have been rescued.
The 41 labourers survived on food and oxygen supplied to them via steel pipes as rescuers spent 400 hours digging through debris to reach them.
They were eventually pulled through a narrow passageway on a wheeled stretcher one by one, where they were embraced by smiling crowds.
The 2.8-mile tunnel in Uttarkhand, India, collapsed on November 12 after being hit by a landslide.
A dozen men rushed to the site and worked overnight to dig through rocks and debris, taking turns to drill using hand-held tools.
Rescuers resorted to manual digging after their drilling machine broke down on Friday.
The rescued men, said to be in their 20s, were taken to a nearby hospital after being freed from the collapsed tunnel site.
