A STUNNED fisherman had his boat punctured after it was attacked several times by an endangered skate.Paul Hutchison hurriedly headed for the shore as air hissed out of his small craft after the large fish left a TOOTH embedded on the bow.The 41-year-old was on a solo trip off the coast of Muckle Roe, Shetland, and initially thought it was one of the seals regularly spotted in the waters.But he was alarmed when the skate rammed his boat five times before launching a final piercing attack.Paul, a lifeboat technician based in Shetland, said: "There was definitely a point where I felt very vulnerable out on that small boat. The sixth time it came to surface, it fully burst the boat. I knew I had a limited amount of time to get back to shore. I was relieved to make it back." Paul only realised the attack came from a skate after watching back a video.He explained: "I am currently working with the University of the Highlands and Islands on deciphering why the endangered animal would attack."From the tooth they have been able to identify it as a critically endangered male flapper skate."
