Struggling Scots battered by £10m Tory 'poverty tax'

PEOPLE in Scotland lost out on more than £10million in Universal Credit (UC) payments in one month due to a "poverty tax", official figures reveal.

The UK Government deducted £11.5million from 194,300 Scottish households on UC last November.

The figures obtained by Glasgow South West MP Chris Stephens show each household had £59 deducted on average.

The total taken away increased by £165,000 between May and November. The number of households subject to deductions grew by 6000 in the same period.

Almost half of the money taken was to repay upfront loans households are forced to take out from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) when waiting five weeks for their first UC payment.

Some cash was deducted due to overpayment mistakes.
