Aspartame found in Diet Coke, Coke Zero and Pepsi Max will be listed as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" in a World Health Organisation (WHO) reclassification.
The sugar replacement, which has been in food and drinks since the 80s, is also found in Fanta, Lucozade, Dr Pepper, Coke Zero and Pepsi Max.
The controversial move is expected to be confirmed next month following a&nbsp;review by the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
The IAEC ruling is intended to assess if something is a potential hazard, based on all published evidence.
But some experts insist&nbsp;it does not take into how much of a account product a person can safely, or is likely to, consume.
The IARC rankings list substances and/or hazards based on evidence that they can cause cancer - not of how high the risk of cancer is from exposure to them.
But Frances Hunt-Wood, secretary-general of the International Sweeteners Association, said: "The IARC is not a food safety body. Aspartame is one of the most thoroughly researched ingredients in history, with more than 90 food safety agencies across the globe declaring it safe."
