A 14-year-old climbed on to a stationary freight train travelling between Carfin and Holytown in Lanarkshire at 9pm last Saturday and touched the overhead line. He remains in a serious condition in hospital.
The following day, a 17-year-old male youth was found by a member of the public on a footpath close to the line at Murrayfield, Edinburgh at about 10.40pm.
He is believed to have gone on to the tracks. He is in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
British Transport Police (BTP) has issued an urgent safety warning. Detective Chief Inspector Marc Francey said: "It should be abundantly clear from these two tragic incidents that the railway is not a playground. During the school holidays I'd urge parents and carers to talk to children about it."
