HEALTH Secretary Neil Gray has been urged to make an emergency statement to MSPs on how he plans to tackle the country's drug deaths crisis.Almost 1200 Scots died from drugs last year - up 12 per cent on the previous year and our rate is twice that of the rest of the UK and the highest in Europe.Alex Cole-Hamilton, leader of the Scottish Lib Dems, has written to Gray to demand he announces fresh measures to deal with it at Holyrood.In it, he says: "Over the last decade, drug deaths in Scotland have more than doubled."I and others struggle to understand why this year the Scottish Government froze the funding for drug and alcohol policy - a realterms cut for services."I am writing to ask if the Scottish Government will make a statement to MSPs to set out further steps that will help stop people dying? This should be done as soon as Parliament returns."It is essential that SNP ministers set out how they intend to provide frontline services with the resources they need to tackle this emergency." Gray said there was recognition in government of more action needed.First Minister John Swinney said his government is working to "strengthen our response to the drug deaths crisis".He added: "The level of drug deaths is wholly unacceptable and I'm very sorry for the heartache it has caused to families who lose loved ones."
