Stamatelopoulos brings back: memories of famous Well day. as he eyes a bnght future

IT doesn't come any more evocative for a Motherwell fan than this scoreline.

And while Stuart Kettlewell's class of 2024 may not quite manage to emulate the heroics of their famous 1991 Scottish Cup Final win over Dundee United, those fans are starting to sit up and take notice of a new hero after Apostolos Stamatelopoulos helped himself to a double.

Now he's started to fulfil a promise he made on day one of the league season not long after he had arrived.

The Australian striker has now scored three in his last three games for Well and could easily have netted a hat-trick or more against a United side who were uncharacteristically shaky in defence.

Stamatelopoulos took some time by his own admission to get up to speed with the Scottish game following his move from Newcastle Jets in his homeland.

The 25-year-old vowed after the first game of the season - a goalless draw against Ross County that once he got up to speed, he would start scoring goals.
