EDINBURGH'S New Year's Eve celebrations were hailed a "huge success" after more than 50,000 people partied in the home of Hogmanay.

Tourists from around the world and many from closer to home united in the capital for festivities dubbed "the best New Year party on the planet".

At least 40,000 took part in the street party while another 10,000 gathered in Princes Street Gardens for a concert headlined by 90s icons Pulp, who added bagpipes on a tartaned-up version of Common People.
