TRAM FIRM IS FINED £240K FOR TRAGEDY

EDINBURGH Trams was fined £240,000 for failing to check its warning bells were loud enough after a pedestrian was knocked down and killed.

Carlos Correa Palacio, 53, died after being struck by a tram on a crossing while making his way home from work.

The tram driver sounded the bell several times to try to warn Carlos but he was only alerted to the danger at the last moment.

A criminal probe found the firm failed to assess the loudness of warning devices on its trams.
