Warder saved from siege by SAS dies at 93

A WARDEN who was rescued by the SAS after being taken hostage in a siege at Peterhead Prison has died aged 93.

Jackie Stuart was held for five days in the jail when 50 inmates took control of a hall in a protest over conditions in 1987.

He was repeatedly beaten and threatened with being set on fire by prisoners.

Jackie, then 57, gained international fame after TV footage showed him being hauled on to the roof of the Aberdeenshire prison while one lag waved a weapon towards his head.

The siege only ended when the SAS stormed the building and brought it back under control.
