NEW Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou dropped in at Lord's to watch his countrymen take a stranglehold on the Ashes.

And the bad news for England? These Aussies don't do Spursy.

After England had lost their last six wickets for 46 runs yesterday, Australia returned to the crease and hammered home their advantage.

A first-innings lead of 91 was extended to 221 by the close of day three with eight-second innings wickets to play with and their two centurions in the series well set.

The fact Usman Khawaja was still there on 58 not out when play was abandoned for the day due to bad weather, with Steve Smith for company, emphasised the point. Australia are firmly in control.

Simply put, England are in need of a bit of magic. But where it might come from is hard to pinpoint.

Former Celtic gaffer Postecoglou starts work today as the Premier League's first Australian head coach and will clock on with a spring in his step.

England are not just watching the sacred urn bob gently downstream and out of their reach.
