IT cost £7million to unblock Scotland’s sewers from wet wipes and other items last year, it has been revealed.

Staggeringly, there were more than 34,500 sewage blockages.

About 80 per cent are due to the wrong items, including wet wipes and sanitary products, being flushed down toilets into the sewer network.

Based on the results of a YouGov Omnibus survey for Scottish Water, 74 per cent of people in Scotland claim never to flush wipes down the loo, yet 36 per cent of households do not have bins in their bathrooms.
