Prosecco growers are particularly vulnerable as their vineyards are on hillsides. When they are battered by wild storms, landslides can wipe out grape crops. And in droughts, what little rain that falls washes downhill. Professor Paolo Tarolli, of the University of Padova, said: “The impact of the two extremes is one thing on a plain, but totally different on a steep slope.” Netting now covers swathes of Italy’s vineyards in a bid to save them from hail.
