ALMOST 3,000 university students have been caught using AI to cheat.Eight out of 10 unis which responded to a Freedom of Information request said they had reprimanded students for using AI tools like ChatGPT.Birmingham City University had the worst record with 402 undergraduates being penalised in the last two academic years. Out of the 80 unis which responded just 15 - including Cambridge said they hadn't detected any AI cheating. The University of St Andrews said it caught 23 cheats and 19 were nabbed at King's College London. The other 77 unis including Oxford - said they didn't have the necessary data to respond. It means the actual figure could be much higher.Certain words indicate AI has been used, while an absence of sloppy grammar is now seen as a sign a student is not cheating.Tech firm AIPRM said: "AI is a tool and not a substitute for writing up your own work."
