MIKE GATTING has issued an impassioned plea for the future of Test cricket as England's series in Pakistan plays out in a Multan echo chamber.

Even with the lure of free entry on two of the days, tiny crowds turned the first Test at the out for 35,000-capacity stadium, providing a depressing backdrop for Harry Brook and Joe Root's record-breaking double act as England romped home with an innings to spare despite the hosts notching 556 in their first knock.

With the second Test being staged at the same venue on Tuesday, the concern is that it will be another embarrassment for the red-ball game.
