A SEAGULL cost taxpayers £460,000 as it delayed the demolition of a theatre where it was nesting. Bulldozers were forced to stop after the bird was spotted on the roof of the Newport Centre, Wales. The gull and its chicks eventually left, but it took 40 days before the work could continue – sending bills rocketing. Newport City Council say the project overspent last year by £460,000. A spokesman said it was “due to delays caused because of a nesting seagull, and additional costs that had to be paid above agreed contract price”. Work to raze the Newport Centre has now been finished with the site replaced by a new campus for Coleg Gwent college. It was the end of an era as the centre had welcomed a host of music legends down the years, with David Bowie and Elton John among the stars to play concerts. A new entertainment venue for the city will be built on the other side of the River Usk.
