Sweets maker Haribo discovered some people gave &lsquo;trick or treaters&rsquo; whatever they have lying around the house. The survey found 61% of kids said Halloween was their best time of year but 43% were disappointed with the quality of the treats handed out.
Hard toffees, broken biscuits and old mints are the top offending treats.
The research also revealed that a carrot, stale crisps, rice cakes and even cough sweets were being doled out.
The study showed that almost one in 10 adults has had their treats rejected because they were judged as not up to scratch.
This may be why some 56% pretend not to be home when treat supplies are low or empty. Children who were wearing the classic costumes, such as witches, zombies and vampires, got the best treats.
Haribo&rsquo;s Phil Murphy said: &ldquo;Every year kids, not to mention their parents, go to huge efforts making their costumes look great.
&ldquo;But adults and kids have different ideas on what the ultimate Halloween treat is.&rdquo;
