AN underwater signal that may solve the mystery of flight MH370 has been detected. Boffins believe the six-second sound – picked up by a special mic called a hydrophone – may pinpoint the aircraft’s final resting place. The Malaysia Airlines plane vanished on March 8, 2014, with 239 people on board. It is believed to have crashed into the Southern Indian Ocean, but the wreckage has never been found. Researchers at Cardiff University have analysed more than 100 hours of underwater recordings. They have found a sound from around the time the jet went missing that could be it hitting the waves. The signal was picked up in Cape Leeuwin in Australia, not far from the plane’s last radar contact. Engineer Dr Usama Kadri, inset, said: “A 200tonne aircraft crashing at 200 metres per second would release the kinetic energy equivalent to a small earthquake. “It would be large enough to be recorded by hydrophones thousands of kilometres away.”
