NASA may have accidentally killed off life on Mars, a space boff says. A mission to find ET 50 years ago could have inadvertently drowned them, astrobiologist Dirk Schulze-Makuch reckons. Dr Schulze-Makuch, 60, of the Technical University Berlin in Germany, said Nasa’s 1976 Viking landers were tasked with detecting life by mixing water and nutrients in soil samples. He said: “What would happen if you poured water over these dry-adapted microbes? In technical terms we would say that we were hyperhydrating them. But in simple terms it would be more like drowning them.” Boffins have since learned life can optimise itself to exist under very dry conditions – like those on the Red Planet. The flawed Viking lander experiments found the presence of chlorinated organics but the result was put down to contamination from cleaning products. It has since been discovered that chlorinated organics could be produced by living organisms.
