They decant bottles of spirits into plastic bags or simply down the contents before staggering out of the store.
Now high-street giant Tesco is combating booze thieves by locking spirits in chainmail suits of armour.
A worker at the store in Brig-house, West Yorks, which has ordered 4,000 of the devices, said: "The old tags were quite easy to pull off.
"Some people were opening the bottles and decanting the alcohol into plasor tic bottles even drinking it in the store.
"The sleeves new prevent people from opening the bottles and the alarms are very, very loud if removed on the sly."
But one shopper said: "The display looks quite intimidating. It is very sad."&nbsp;
The move comes as Tesco boss Ken Murphy, inset, offered body cameras to staff amid a rise in assaults, saying: "It should not have to be like this. Crime is an insult to shoppers and workers."&nbsp;
A petition calling for the Government to crack down on violence against retail workers has reached 47,056 signatures.
Tesco was approached for comment.
