THE Shroud of Turin dates back to when Jesus was alive, boffins claim. The linen burial cloth has long been said to be the one used to wrap Jesus’s body after his crucifixion. The idea was dismissed in the 1980s when scientists said it only dated back to the Middle Ages, hundreds of years after the date he was said to have been executed. But now researchers using X-rays say it was made around the time it is claimed Jesus lived – about 2,000 years ago. The cloth has imprints of a bearded man’s face on the front and back, which many believe is that of Jesus imprinted on to the fabric. Scientists in Italy used wide-angle X-ray scattering to examine the cloth. A study published in the journal Heritage said: “The data profiles were fully compatible with measurements obtained around the time it is claimedon a linen sample whose dating is 55-74 AD, found at Masada, Israel.” Dr Liberato De Caro said the original 1988 test was inaccurate because of “contamination”. The shroud has been preserved since 1578 in the cathedral of San Giovanni Battista in Turin.
