The 30-year-old, who competed at his first Olympics as a 14-year-old at Beijing 2008, came second with partner Noah Williams in the men’s synchronised 10m platform final. It was a first silver medal for Team GB’s flagbearer to go with his three bronze and one gold.
The pair put up a spirited fight and challenged the Chinese gold medal winners all the way to the final round. They shared a hug with their coaches at the poolside after their final dive confirmed their silver, but the Chinese were worthy champions and took gold with a series of remarkable dives.
Daley’s success was a remarkable comeback for the athlete who walked away from the sport after winning gold at Tokyo in 2021 to concentrate on family life. He moved to the US but revealed his return was inspired by his young son Robbie.
