ISRAEL today faced warnings of a wider regional war after a leading Hamas official was assassinated by a drone strike in Lebanon.

Drone killing of Hamas leader sparks fear of wider conflict

Saleh al-Arouri, 57, was the most senior figure from the Palestinian terror group to have been killed since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, igniting a war in Gaza that has left thousands dead. He was killed along with six other Hamas members in the strike on a Beirut apartment block, according to officials from the group, the Lebanese government and Lebanon's powerful people, its security, sovereignty and resistance", adding: "We affirm that this crime will never pass without response and punishment." Arouri, inset left, was deputy to the Hamas supreme political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, and headed the group in the West Bank.
