The Kenyan runner, 24, and his coach Gervais Hakizimana lost their lives when a car driven by the athlete veered off the road into a ditch before smashing into a tree in Kenya's Rift Valley.
Kiptum and Hakizimana died at the scene of yesterday's crash. A 24-year-old woman who was also in the car survived with serious injuries and was treated at a local hospital.
The long-distance runner won last year's London Marathon in a course record of 2:01:25. He went on to set the world record at Chicago in October with a time of two hours and 35 seconds taking 34 seconds off the previous best set by compatriot Eliud Kipchoge in Berlin in 2022.
