The 31-year-old, who shared a catwalk with Cara Delevingne and Bella Hadid while modelling for Rihanna's lingerie brand Savage X Fenty, grew up in south London with her Jamaican-born graphic designer father and New Yorker mother who taught at Camberwell College of Art.
She said they always encouraged her to have an opinion on everything, adding: "Appearance was never the focal point of who we were, it was always about what we had to say."
She told ES Magazine: "I never thought I was particularly attractive, but I had such a strong sense of self because of that not being the focus."
The fashion star said her early days in the business were confused because the industry did not know what to do with her, adding: "I didn't fit any of the requirements at that time." But she said taking the plunge to work fulltime as a model transformed her as a person and she takes a much deeper interest in the business than some of her contemporaries.
She said: "I'm interested. When I'm on set I want to talk to the stylist, the photographer. I want to get to know people. I've immersed myself in it.
"You can move people, make people cry, make people angry, fashion has so much power."
